Brown’s Island was created in 1789 as a portion of the Haxall Canal and was given that name in honor of the island’s first settler, Elijah Brown, who bought the area in 1826. It served as the location of the Confederate States Laboratory, where women and children created ammunition and other military supplies during the American Civil War.

One of the largest collections of original manuscripts, correspondence, first editions, mementos, and personal items is housed in the museum. The museum also gives a general picture of Richmond in the early 19th century, where Poe resided and worked. The museum showcases Poe’s life and career by highlighting his lengthy residence in Richmond and commemorating his accomplishments via photographs, artifacts, and verse.
